I read somewhere that if you want your spouse to remember your anniversary you need to celebrate it in a big way every year starting at year #1. Or maybe I made that up myself. Either way, I swear by it. For our first anniversary we spent a marvelous week enjoying the shores of mid-coast Maine. For our second anniversary I convinced my husband that we needed to go to the Maldives (they’re sinking for goodness sake!) for a long weekend. It was heaven on earth.
A speedboat transferred us from a small island airport to the dock at the Hilton Waldorf Astoria resort. Our villa host was waiting for us at the dock with a golf cart to take us to our over-water villa. The villa was spectacular. The giant bed faced a small sitting area that had a window cut out of the floor so we could see the fish swimming below us. The bathroom had a giant Jacuzzi tub and an outdoor shower. Both the bathroom and the bedroom/sitting room had floor to ceiling windows looking over the clearest blue waters I’ve ever seen.
During our stay Michael and I tried two of the excursions offered by the resort (traditional Maldivian fishing and snorkeling) but mostly we just relaxed. We could choose to lounge by one of two resort pools or our own private infinity pool. We had a ladder that went from our villa right into the Indian Ocean so we spent some time snorkeling there and also in the hotel’s “house reef”.

The staff at the Waldorf Astoria went out of their way to make our anniversary special. Twice when we returned from dinner our “room boy” had decorated the bed with flowers, leaves, sculpted towels, and an anniversary message. On the night of our anniversary he also left a bottle of wine and a small cake. Our “room boy” was quite proud of himself as evidenced in the elaborate handshake (pounding the rock included) he gave Michael when we passed him along the walkway to our villa.
I think I’ve accomplished my goal of celebrating anniversary #2 in a big way. Now how do I top this for #3…
